Language in the Third Millennium VII

The leading theme of the conference was: Word in (Con)text. Our goal has always been to integrate the scholars in modern Philology in the discussion on the theory and practice of linguistic communication in different cultures and media, as well as language teaching methods in close correlation with linguistic research.

Leading theme:
Word in (Con)text

The main theme of the conference covered a very wide spectrum of problems related to the use of words, in line with the postulate of Wittgenstein (1953) "Do not look for meaning, look for use", in particular: connotations, metaphorical, metonymic and affective meanings as well as issues concerning the modification of word senses in the context of expanding and narrowing their meanings.
We have also initiated a discussion on the broadly conceived word-text relation, the relation covering the interdependence of word and style, word and genre, both in everyday and literary texts, as well as on lexical exponents of syntactic consistency, coherence and lexical corpus research.
In the field of Intercultural Communication  the most interesting topics are: cultural scripts in their various definitions, cultural stereotypes, cultural models and postulates, banner words, international and “non-cultural” words as well as semantic borrowings and their functioning in the context of native and target culture.
In the field of Translation Studies we focused on the status of the word in the era of the Internet and information technology, and in particular on its location and role in translation memories, databases and corpora, in multimodal texts (on stage, in film), in translation studies discourse (word in criticism and translation theory, a translated word as a tool of colonialism) and in the sociology of translation (the strategic value of words).
